Marikay Ross Obituary

Marikay Ross succumbed to her battle with cancer at Providence Hospital in Newberg, OR, on July 9th, 2023, at 2:05 PM surrounded by friends and family.

She was born on August 20th, 1946 and grew up in SW Portland.  She was the oldest of three girls, her younger sisters Marsha and Lisa.  She attended the Worldwide Church of God from early adulthood, married, and had two children, Kathryn Michelle and Michael Lundy.  While her children were still young, she juggled her Stay At Home Mom duties and education, graduating from Marylhurst College in 1991 with a Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies when her children were 9 and 12.

She faced many challenges in her life; her father's alcoholism and early death, the very public suicide of her sister and best friend, Marsha Hiltibrand, a divorce, dissolution of a church she built her life around, and navigating the waters of single motherhood and a one-income household.

She found herself in nature, art, music, and good friendship.

Marikay is survived by her sister Lisa Pieren, her two children, and six grandchildren.

  1. Mom, you deserved more than this life gave you, but I find comfort in knowing you afforded yourself happiness in little things. I’m glad you had a good six years of retirement filled with friendships and art. I found all your craft stuff, and it looks like you had a lot of fun in your spare time! You had a hard time letting go of your “shoulds,” but I’m glad you found activities that brought you happiness.

Thank you for the times when you wanted to buy me gifts, but knew I needed the money more. Thank you for the times you listened and validated my broken heart. Thank you for the stories, pictures, and notes you left behind to help me know you better. Having to throw away your memories put a brick in my stomach, and I regret not being able to have lunch with you at the golf course like you wanted. Though we had a hard go at it, I am looking forward to being with you on the other side where pain and baggage will not be present in our relationship. You had a lot of struggles; struggle no more. Rest in peace knowing your daughter appreciates, misses, and loves you.
