Dwight Warren Freeman, M.D.
1929 - 2017
Dwight Warren Freeman, M.D., passed away at the age of 87 at his Portland, Oregon home on Saturday, March 18, 2017.
Dwight was born on July 22, 1929, in Chicago IL to Andrew and Ruth (Anderson) Freeman. He was the oldest of three children, older brother to Miriam and Wesley.
After graduating from high school in Chicago, Dwight received his BS and MD from the University of Illinois in Chicago. He interned in Decatur, IL until 1956 and then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to serve in the U.S. Navy as a flight surgeon. He served on the carrier USS Bon Homme Richard and later in the Naval Reserve as a Lt Commander.
Dwight completed his residency in orthopedics at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago in 1964, after which he returned to California to establish his private practice of orthopedic surgery in Menlo Park.
Dwight received a Masters in Anthropology (Medical) in 1977 from Hayward State University and then moved to Creswell, Oregon to continue his medical practice in Cottage Grove. In 1985, he moved to the Portland area and focused on spine and pain management at various pain centers until his retirement in 2002.
Dwight was extremely interested in music and the arts, and he supported a number of organizations, including the Oregon Symphony, Portland Baroque Orchestra, and Portland Youth Philharmonic. He loved jazz music and hosted a radio program for several years about its history, using the moniker "Dr. Jazz". He was an avid Ducks fan, an interested follower of politics and current affairs, a voracious reader, and a world traveler. Dwight had an impressive collection of books and musical recordings, and he left behind a number of his paintings and drawings. He loved to share his various interests and support those of his family and friends.
Dwight is survived by his wife Jani Paziot-Freeman; his brother G. Wesley (Louise) Freeman; five children from his first marriage: Roger Freeman, Carolyn (John) Cameron, Paul (Barbara) Freeman, Julie (James) Brown, and Fredrick (Kimberly) Freeman; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
